Hi!...I'm Nicole, I'm here at the Four Seasons Tea Room in Sierra Madre. It's beautiful in here, and you really need to see it to believe it!......I highly recommend a visit! Relax. Wind down and enjoy the ambience. You'll be glad you did....
But it's beautiful outside, too, so I'd like you to join me on a walking tour of Sierra Madre. We'll see some of the shops, some of the restaurants and a lot of tree lined streets and classic architecture!......
Let's begin our Walking Tour here in the heart of Sierra Madre, Kersting Court..…
The weather is perfect for exploring Sierra Madre, and I can't think of a better way to start the tour than with a Smoothie from Sierra Juice Company......Everything in here is tasty!......
Look directly across the street, and you'll see the historic Hotel Shirley. One of the oldest and most elegant buildings in the downtown area......
Sierra Madre is home to fine dining and a varied selection of classic wines from California’s famed wine growing regions. Peek into the Bottle Shop and take a look!….Charles Krug, Sebastiani, Christian Brothers, to name a few…Special Labels can also be ordered!…
Let's walk North on Baldwin....We'll see some great places to dine...Casa del Rey offers delicious Mexican cuisine......Village Pizzeria has some of the best pizza in the area......Enjoy it here while you take in the gorgeous views, order it for delivery, or enjoy it by the slice!... ...
As we continue North, you'll notice that Sierra Madre is home to some very stylish salons! Capelli Court, for example.... ...While you're inside, say hello to Esther, or any of the professional stylists....They definitely know a thing or two about Southern California’s latest trends in hairstyling!.......
As we leave the downtown district, we'll continue North on Baldwin Avenue to Carter.......Where we can walk East.......And visit the historic Lizzie's Trail Inn...And the starting point of the Mount Wilson Trail....Lizzie’s trail Inn is famous for its stop as a popular inn as residents from Hollywood, Beverly hills and throughout Southern California came here by horse, trolley car and even private airplanes in the late 1800’s and up until the mid 1900’s! Explore and look around and imagine yourself in Sierra Madre in the 1920’s! Is that Rudolph Valentino?!!…
Now let’s retrace our steps and walk West on Carter…Notice the architecture of the homes and the natural way they set in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains…Craftsman, Spanish and Mediterranean influences can be seen all over Sierra Madre‘s architecture…..
We’ll walk about 4 blocks to Lima Street. Take a moment to look South, down over the expanse of the Los Angeles basin. If you’re walking this tour in the evening hours, you’ll be able to see the expanse of the lights of the city below….Now let’s continue as Carter gently jogs to the right….
You’ll notice that you’re approaching a canyon. This is Bailey canyon. A beautiful respite from the heat in the Summer, and a lovely place to take in the Autumn breezes and azure blue sky that we’re enjoying now. Visit the kiosk for detailed information on hiking to the beautiful waterfall, and information on Bailey Canyon’s varied wildlife…such as birds, coyotes, bears, raccoons, and much more…The scenery is breathtaking!....
OK! Now, when you’re ready, let’s stroll back the way we came and walk South, downhill, on Lima Street. In a moment, on your right hand side, you’ll see a classic home built with elegant Italian details. The water tower on the property was actually a residence for many years, before the Sierra Madre earthquake in 1991.
Take in some more views of the city below, and walk three more blocks , just past the corner of Highland. Here, on your right, you’ll see the magnificent Pinney House. It was designed by renowned architects Samuel and Joseph Cather Newsom for Dr Elbert Pinney in 1887. It was known throughout Southern California as the Sierra Vista Hotel, and the original prices for room and board were $8 to $12 per week. It’s a classic example of Queen Anne architecture, and a Cultural Historic Landmark. Today, individual suites have been updated and leased as apartments.
Now, to wrap up this section of the Walking Tour, continue south on Lima Street to Sierra Madre Blvd.
There, walk East, and on your left, enjoy the serene sights of Memorial Park and the solemn Memorial to those Sierra Madreans who have given their lives in service to their country…
And on your left, you’ll see The Old North Church , a beautiful white tower seen in many paintings and photographs. In a few blocks, you’ll arrive back in downtown Sierra Madre and Kersting Court!
It’s been a pleasure leading you on this Walking Tour of Sierra Madre! Please continue to watch local Channel 3, as there will be new updates to this Walking Tour, as well as new routes and different Walking Tours very soon! Good Night!
