SCRIPT:
Bristol has a population of over 400,000.
Almost ½ of those live in areas which violate healthy air standards.
The traffic here accounts for 90% of the pollution in Bristol.
Like all major cities in the UK, Bristol has a huge number of cars on its roads, and the numbers are growing.
Did you know that current UK traffic amounts to 321 Billion kilometres every year?
Or that on average we each travel over 6,000 miles each year?
The financial costs for traffic are a collective 15 billion pound hole in our pockets.
And this congestion is set to increase 65% by 2010.
So whats being done about it?
I set out to ask our councillors, health authorities and the great Bristol public what they wanted to do, and what they were doing about it.
I went to meet the councillor of the most congested ward in Bristol.
Bristol recently elected its first Green party member and I wondered how he would improve our traffic.
I went to Bath to see Dr.Rivett, whose study on Bristols traffic had showed alarming results.
I thought it was time for the public to have their and rate Bristols traffic out of 10.
An average of 2.8 showed our traffic needed massive improvement.
There seemed to be 2 main points emerging from all the interviews –
Firstly, that more traffic made everything except cars less appealing, and that this resulted in a negative spiral.
And that the best response to this problem would be to greatly improve alternatives such as buses, cycleways and possibly trams, leading to a positive spiral out of it.
One idea for improvement was the reintroduction of bus conductors.
But what would Bristolians think about this?
I took a petition around Bristol to find out.
From the haves to the have-nots, and across 16 postcodes, I collected over 500 signatures.
68% of households signed it, so 2 out of every 3 people thought it was a good idea.
I gave the results to Dr.Brown and several travel groups, and whatever the result of this, I hope it encourages discussion and a few new ideas.
There are ways we can all help reduce our traffic.
I leave you with scenes form BikeWeek 2006.
Or what some hope will be an image of the future.
