It’s a celebration of all things piratical and the fantasy pirate lifestyle. The Lee Island Pirate Days Festival in cooperation with the City of Ft. Myers and the Make-a-Wish Foundation celebrate all weekend long with an annual grand waterfront entertainment spectacle in downtown Ft. Myers.
Pirates--wearing colorful gear and sailing black-flagged ships—land on the shore of the Caloosahatchee River each spring. Making camp at Centennial Park, the pirates celebrate by inviting locals to share in the pirate experience including the opportunity to sail aboard the pirate vessels for sunset cruises.
Visitors from all over the world and of all age ranges anxiously wait at the gates each morning for the sound of the cannon's BOOM that signals the beginning of the festival day. There is always much to see and do, music and variety acts on four stages, games to be played, wares to be bought, and food and drink to be tasted.
A delightful variety of refreshments is part of the festival attraction from pitas and gyro wraps to homemade ice cream desserts and smoothies, bottled water and soft drinks to draft beer.
Pirate Vendors offer games to entertain children and adults. Rides and games of skill put smiles on the faces of all that participate.
Unusual treasures and hand crafted items from all types of artisans make shopping at the Pirate Festival a unique experience. Clothing, jewelry, toys, flowers, perfumes and knickknacks of all sorts are eagerly purchased by festival goers.
The main draws of the festival are the authentic performances by seasoned professional pirate acts. On shore, these performers in period dress roam among the tents spread across Centennial Park in downtown Fort Myers to interact with patrons providing entertainment that can only be found at an historically themed event such as this. The park's location on the bank of the Caloosahatchee River remains the perfect setting for the main attraction - Two-masted schooners armed with a battery of black powder weaponry engage the landside pirates in a full fledged sea battle. Cannons blazing and pistols firing the pirates give no quarter in their attack. Meanwhile, on shore, the defenders of the festival grounds are just as ambitious, with a barrage of big gun cannon fire along the bank. Merry making and celebration traditionally follow the twice daily sea battle no matter which side proves victorious.
A portion of the proceeds from the event each year benefits the Make-a-Wish Foundation. This worthwhile charity helps young people with life threatening diseases by brightening their lives making it possible for them and their families to find a respite from the unpleasant and often painful treatments they must endure. These children may choose to "Be Someone," "Have Something," "Go Somewhere," or "Meet Someone" and Make-A-Wish makes their dreams come true. At the 2006 Lee Island Pirate Days Festival, On Site Event Productions was able to not only give a portion of the proceeds to Make-A-Wish, but was able to directly grant a wish to a child who chose to attend the Pirate Festival as his "wish." He and his family was given the VIP treatment and attended the VIP reception, dining and partying with the pirates, then sailed aboard one of the pirate schooner ships as special additions to his festival experience.
The Lee Island Pirate Days Festival appears to just spring from the ground each year to the delight of area pirate lovers. But this festival is a very well planned and skillfully executed event. Proper advertising and promotion continue to make the Lee Island Pirate Days Festival one of the most popular events held in downtown Fort Myers.
An advertising and promotional blitz of TV, Radio, and Newspapers for several weeks prior to the event galvanize the festival schedule in the public's mind.
On Site Event Productions has crafted a successful plan that ensures maximum attendance and a flawlessly run festival. Rowan Thompson, Event Coordinator and owner of On Site Event Productions uses her over a decade of experience to manage the festival from planning to completion. It is Rowan's expertise in management and marketing, as well as her hands-on experience with historical events nationwide that makes this event a guaranteed success. Wayne Thompson, On Site's Co-owner and the Director of Site Management is a master of design and construction and a previous performer at historical events making him the perfect partner in this venture. Rowan and Wayne rely not only on their combined expertise; but also on the dedication of over two hundred staff members. Devoted community volunteers team with paid performers to comprise the work force that is The Lee Island Pirate Days Festival.
The Third Annual Lee Island Pirate Days Festival approaches quickly. The next festival is Saturday, April 21st and Sunday, April 22nd, 2007. There are limited opportunities available to take part in The Lee Island Pirate Days Festival due to continued participation by returning sponsors. Contact your On Site Event Productions representative today to find out how you can get on board!
