Narration
The following is a demonstration of Custom Concrete Applications’ installation of a Decorative Concrete Surface. The client’s desire for this project was to have a decorative concrete surface that resembled natural slate.
A light grey “grout” color was selected to contrast with a darker grey stone color.
A focal point will also be created using a brick-arch design stencil and brick trim along the edge of the patio.
First, the existing concrete surface must be prepared by cleaning thoroughly to accept specially formulated concrete coatings.
Any areas of the surface that have paint or remnants of adhesive are removed with a high-speed grinder.
A diluted Muratic Acid is used to etch the existing concrete to ensure a solid bond with the new decorative application. The surface is power-washed with the acid bath …
… and then is thoroughly rinsed.
The surface is pressure washed to remove dirt, mold and mildew.
As a final step in the surface preparation, any existing small cracks are filled.
After the surface has been allowed to dry, the base-coat is applied in the client’s selected grout color.
The building’s walls, the grass and plantings, and any non-movable features are protected and masked off.
The client’s selected design is then applied. For the slate pattern, special fiber tape is applied in a random, yet natural pattern by hand.
The special decorative stencil is applied as well.
The color-coat is now ready for application.
First, any accent design areas are applied … in this case it’s the red brick-arch focal point and the brick trim.
A special sprayer applies the decorative color-coat. The crew works carefully to apply a thick and consistent coating.
The masked areas are quickly removed before the coat dries.
The new decorative areas are masked off to protect them from the application of the next color.
The slate color coat is also applied in a thick and consistent manner.
Again, the taped pattern is removed.
The new decorative surface must be allowed to cure 100%. In sunny areas with warm temperatures this may occur in a few hours … in shady areas this may require overnight drying.
The final step is the application of a sealer. Two coats of Concrete Sealer are applied to create a protective film on the surface. These top coats bring out the full color and luster of the color-coat … as well as provide a hard protective surface that will last for years.
This patio project was just one example of the decorative concrete resurfacing possibilities.
Custom Concrete Applications has a wide variety of colors, textures and designs that will help improve the look of your home or business.
