Script Details
YesThese two Cold War jet fighters were poised to “mix it up” at many locations throughout the world, but they actually got into /real /combat in the skies over Vietnam. The F-4 Phantom II, with its harsh symmetry, swept-back wings, and drooping tail was called "brutishly ugly" by some pilots. The silver MiG-21, with its lean tubular shape, prominent rounded spine, and large swept tail, was, and still is, probably one of the best-known Soviet aircraft.
The MiG-21 was designed as a short-range interceptor and light strike fighter and was the first Soviet aircraft to reach Mach 2. This rugged, simply built plane could operate with a minimum of logistical support and be serviced by an unskilled crew with little more than a wrench and a screwdriver. By comparison, the F-4 Phantom, which /also/ flew at twice the speed of sound, contained over 50,000 feet of wiring and had more than half a million fasteners holding it together.
