1.0
One of the reasons that we like computers so much is that they give us both privacy and connection to the whole world at the same time. That seems exciting.
1.1
Unfortunately, the Internet has also proven to be a dangerous place to play if we are not careful. This training will give some ideas and examples that all of us can benefit from.

3.0
It is true that when used correctly, computers and the Internet can expand the world for us.
3.1
The unfortunate thing is that not everyone is using it for fun and expanding our world. Unless we take some real precautions, what we do for fun, can end in tragedy.

5.0
Stories like the one on the previous slide are unfortunately far too common. Certain people are out there to take advantage of us. And if you think it doesn't happen a lot, think again.
5.1
According to the United States Department of Justice, "One in five children are solicited for sex by an online predator."
5.2
In fact, studies have shown that at any given moment there are 50,000 predators surfing the internet.
5.3
Just think about all the kids you know. Imagine how many of them can be in trouble if they don't follow some safety rules. Make sure you and your friends are not at risk.

6.0
We all like to be understood. We all like to feel special. Sometimes, it may seem like we are not getting any notice from our family, friends, or relatives.
6.1
It can be nice to have someone out there to listen...especially if it seems nobody close to us is listening. But you must keep a few things in mind about online "friends".

7.0

7.1
It is hard to look someone in the eyes and completely lie. But let's face it; this is not the case in chat rooms.
7.2
How many of your friends pretend to be what they are not online? You may even play around with pretending to be the person you want to be, or someone you are not.
7.3
If you or any of your friends do this, what makes you think others online are not doing the same?
7.4
The problem is that for you, it may only be a game. For others, they may have something else in mind.

8.0
There are a number of precautions that you can take to reduce the risk of being victimized.
8.1
Never give any information that could lead someone you don't know to be able to find you. Remember, not everyone out there is just looking for friends.
8.2
Never give out personal information like your social security number, date of birth, address or even the town you live in.
8.3
Be leery of those who want to know too much.
8.4
Sometimes, we think we are being safe, but we are not. Let's look at the next example to see how clever some of these people can be.

10.0
There are people out there who will do whatever it takes to abuse kids.
10.1
Some even become obsessed with this.
10.2
Because of this, they will stop at nothing to gather whatever information they can to get to you.
10.3
A simple name and town can be the beginning of hunting you down.
10.4
And when we get comfortable with someone, we let our guard down. Child predators know that. When online, you must remember it too.

11.0
If all of this seems a bit unrealistic to you, think again.
11.1
Recently, undercover police have pretended to be teenage children in an effort to catch people looking to take advantage of children. The results show just how common and serious this danger is.
11.2
In another undercover sting operation, 50 predators were caught over a three day time period in California.
11.3
In every state, people have been arrested for soliciting children online. They try to meet up with children (mostly tweens and teens) to sexually take advantage of them.

12.0
After forming a taskforce to hunt out online predators, Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett had this to say about the results:
12.1
"Nearly every day, someone on the Internet approaches an undercover agent...trying to make sexual contact with young boys and young girls."
12.2
According to a survey commissioned by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and Cox Communications,
12.3
Seventy-one percent of the teens surveyed reported receiving messages online from someone they don't know.
12.4
To put this in perspective, if you have 10 friends that use the Internet, seven of them have received a message from an unknown person.
12.5
Forty-five percent (or four out of ten of your friends) have been asked for personal information by someone they don't know.
12.6
Thirty percent (or three of out of 10 of your friends) have considered meeting someone that they've only talked to online
12.7
Fourteen percent (or more than one out of your 10 friends) have actually met a person face-to-face that they've only spoken to over the internet.

13.0
We all like to look good. It often makes us feel good.
13.1
As we get to know people online, they often want to know what we look like.
13.2
Please do not fall victim to the temptation to send a picture of yourself, a family member or a friend.
13.3
The dangers are simply too great. If someone is a real friend, looks aren't important anyway.
13.4
But even more, so many problems have occurred because of photographs. The next few slides will show some examples of what can happen when you send someone your photo over the internet.

17.0
As we travel the Internet, we will unfortunately come across some websites that we should not enter. Be careful not to let curiosity allow you to wander in places you do not belong.
17.1
Sites that have inappropriate material or questionable content like racist remarks are much more dangerous than many people know.
17.2
It has been shown that certain content, particularly graphic pictures or video, can become addictive.
17.3
Many of these questionable sites are prone to access with people who are looking to do harm and abuse kids.
17.4
These sites and the people that also use them can cause harm to your computer by sending viruses that will destroy your computer.
17.5
Be strong and avoid sites you know you shouldn't be at.

18.0
One of the greatest dangers you will find online is someone pretending to be your friend and working toward a face to face meeting.
18.1
NEVER meet with someone you met online unless it is with the permission and under the guidance of a parent or guardian.

19.0
That last slide may seem like common sense to you. But is it?
19.1
Studies show that one-third of all children between the ages of 8 and 18 have talked about meeting someone they have only met through the Internet.
19.2
Don't risk it. It may turn out fine, but it just isn't worth the danger. We always think that our situation is different. But so did most of the kids who have had problems.

21.0
We've spent a lot of time talking to you about the things that can go wrong if you are not careful.
21.1
Please be cautious with the things we discussed, but don't be afraid to use your computer.
21.2
We can learn so many great things and come into contact with so many amazing people.
21.3
Take advantage of all of this, just remember to be smart. And when you are unsure, ask a parent, guardian, teacher, or counselor. They will help keep you safe.

22.0
I know that we all like our privacy and doing things our way. We also like our freedom.
22.1
But more than this, we all like to be safe and happy. If you think it is cool to keep things from your parents, think again. The Internet is not the place to make our own rules.
22.2
Often, those who want to hurt us have all the experience. You are just trying to be a kid and grow up.
22.3
Think of it this way: When you meet new friends in person, after a while, your parent or guardian gets to know them. How about introducing them to your new online friends?

24.0
So, as you continue to enjoy the Internet, remember these important tips:
24.1
Be careful not to give out personal information in a chat room or bulletin board.
24.2
Make sure your parents or guardian knows what you are doing on the Internet. We may like our privacy, but we don't know everything. Our parents can protect us from things that can be dangerous.
24.3
Do not send a picture of yourself or a family member without your parent's or guardian's permission.
24.4
Do not write to or respond to someone who makes you feel uncomfortable or scared.
24.5
Do not open or reply to emails if you don't know who they are from.

25.0
Never meet with someone you have met online without a parent's or guardian's permission. If you get permission to meet, make sure you are not alone for that first visit.
25.1
Immediately tell your parents if you read anything on the Internet that makes you feel uncomfortable. Sometimes that gut feeling is a great resource.
25.2
Remember that online, people are not always who they say they are. Just because they say they are your age and gender, does not mean this is the case.
25.3
Do not download or install software of any kind without checking with your parent or guardian.

26.0
If you are EVER unsure of what to do or if something is right, ask your parent, guardian, teacher, or guidance counselor. They will get you the answers you need.
26.1
Remember, you are not alone. People at school and at home care about you.
26.2
The Internet can be a wonderful tool to expand your life. Don't let it be a tool for others to hurt you.
