Along the Northern coast of Peru, in between the world's most plentiful fishing grounds of the Pacific Ocean and the highlands of the Amazon rainforest, are the fertile valleys, rivers and mountains that held the secrets of an unknown civilization, the Sican.
The figure on these two large gold squares is of the Sican Lord – the earthly body of Naymlap, (the historic and mythical founder of the first dynasty of kings in the Lambayeque valleys. Notice his wing-shaped eyes and how they appear to symbolize a diving seabird. A beak-like nose and feathered headdress also add to his bird-like qualities, perhaps reflecting the legend that he had grown wings and flown away before he died.
During the middle period of the Sican culture, this religious figure dominated the imagery on painted cloth, pottery and most amazingly, the precious metal objects of the most elite society members. It was a divine and symbolic reminder of this sacred leader’s importance to his people. Take a closer look at how the Sican Lord has been painstakingly cut out of the thinnest sheet of flattened gold and his features embossed in the metal. You can also see the numerous holes that have been punched along the mountain-like borders. Often objects like these were sewn onto garments for special ceremonial occasions.
