The Miskitos, were among the last group in the region who did not have titles for their traditional lands. In 2004, the Honduran government approved a new property law that recognized the collective property of indigenous people. However, a deep-seated and long-standing mistrust between the Miskito people and the Honduran government made the demarcation difficult.
