Script Details

***custom demo required***
Walesa- Former President of Poland, founder of Solidarity, 65 years old
• The communists were following a simple rule; do not allow the protesters to organize.
And we couldn’t build Solidarity because we were being constantly dismantled. Then we got help from heaven, a Pole was chosen as Pope.
Without the Pope, we wouldn’t have been able to organize ourselves for a long time, we wouldn’t have been able to fight communism.

Dziwisz- Cardinal secretary to Pope John Paul for 27 years, 70 years old, holy man
• In a certain sense, Father Popieluszko, was performing this task.
He was the son of the church, and not a revolutionary.
He preached freedom and human rights, but he did not call for a revolution.

Glemp- Former primate of Poland, 75 years old, aristocrat
• It was not in the episcopates plan to help the Solidarity movement.
When it comes to the social aspects of freedom and helping people then yes.
But when it comes to politics, the church has no way of getting into office.
There were no programs for that sort of thing.
Bishops are not allowed to be involved in politics.

Chmielewski- 55 years old, retired Polish man
• It so happened that we – Father Jerzy and I – were alone.
It was an odd day, and our conversation got personal.
Father Jerzy was down, and he was talking about his problems.
He worried he was not able to take care of his parents.
