To put it in simple terms, the Forum was the downtown of the Roman Era. It was the center of the political, religious and commercial life of the city. The Forum included many temples and basilicas. The basilicas, were in fact the largest buildings in the Forum. It is important to mention, that the area where the Roman Forum is located, was originally used as a cemetery. People living in the neighboring hills, like the Palatine and the Capitoline, used to bury their dead here. The Etruscan Dynasty of the Tarquins, paved the way for the Roman Forum. Nevertheless, it is believed that nothing really major happened in this area before the end of the Punic Wars, in the year 146 B.C., when Rome defeated Carthage.
