Ulster was the most Gaelic part of Ireland. It was Catholic, and considered backward and non-progressive– there were few towns or roads and the region was heavily wooded.
In the early seventeenth century, the plantation of Ulster took place –Protestant Scottish and English settlers migrated there in their thousands, cleared the land and transformed the most Gaelic part of Ireland into the most British. Ulster’s Gaelic lords were exiled to Europe and rebels were stripped of their land.
