INTERVIEWER: Rafael, you are originally from Cuba. You came to this country in 1994 on a small raft where you spent three and a half days in the middle of the ocean surrounded by sharks. It's an unbelievable story! Tell us a bit more. . .
RAFAEL: Well, that was precisely what happened; you know we have this problem in Cuba with Communism. I finished college in 1992, I became a mechanical engineer but did not like that system and could not live in my country one more day. With some friends, we decided that either we make it to a free country or we die trying, so we escaped on a small raft and headed towards the United States. We spent a little over three days in the ocean. Although we were risking our lives, we had the hope of making it to this great land of freedom and opportunity. I will never forget saying goodbye to my mother (pause a couple of seconds) and telling her that I would rather die in the ocean than live one more day in that comunist country. Well we were rescued by the American coast guard and thanks to them I am able to tell you my story today.
