We wanted to start off by talking about literacy. Because, there are some shocking statistics:
Over 700 million illiterate people worldwide - ¨ø of which are women.
122 million illiterate youth.
There are more illiterate women than the total population of the European Union.
And, it is particularly startling that
A child born to an educated mother is more than twice as likely to survive to age 5. To survive...

So, we will start with a story. In the mid-60¡¯s a slight woman named Harriet Van Meter traveled to India. There she saw long lines of people waiting. After inquiring she discovered the people were waiting hours to get books, not bread. Books. So, returning home she set up office in her basement, bought some shelving and got to work. 40 some years later and what started as one woman¡¯s reaction to injustice has become the International Book Project. We have sent:
nearly 6 million books to 140 countries.
over 200,000 books annually to schools, libraries, churches, community organizations and Peace Corps Volunteers.
