Towering skyscrapers in Shanghai and modern Olympic monuments in Beijing are embedded in the world’s perception of China today. However, areas outside of large cities are a different story altogether. Remote and less accessible, China’s rural areas and migrant communities are rife with underfunded schools and barriers to academic achievement that slow social mobility for much of China’s population. Rooted in the goal of overcoming these barriers, the ******************************************************************************************************************** is committed to improving rural education in China through impact evaluation of effective and sustainable policy-relevant solutions.

Three main features distinguish **** in the rapidly growing field of development economics and the sea of development-oriented non-profits: our people and collaborators; our policy oriented perspective; our expertise in education, nutrition and health; and our unique research approach. Why does ****focus on education?

**** is a program that brings together Stanford faculty, staff, students and alumni to work on solving real-world problems at the nexus of education, nutrition and health. Far from being confined to the Ivory Tower of Academia, ****’s laboratory is in impoverished villages where people are seeking to improve their lives.
On the ground in China, Stanford researchers collaborate closely with colleagues from China’s top academies and universities, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking and Tsinghua Universities and Northwest University of Xi’an. These collaborations allow **** to utilize the human resources within China and leverage not only their research expertise but also their comparative advantages of proximity and cultural familiarity.

But academics cannot carry out ****’s mission alone. **** has forged strong connections with both local and national levels of government that have been helpful in upscaling effective projects to reach many more kids.

In addition to local governments, **** also engages in designing, advising and evaluating innovative projects being carried out and supported by NGOs, foundations, corporate social responsibility departments, and passionate philanthropists.

****’s approach is one that fits the policy context of China well.

While **** projects are dynamic and evolving, ****’s research and action has three themes: Nutrition, Heath and Education; Technology and Education; and Quality and Access to Secondary Education and Beyond. Specific projects in recent years have worked on issues ranging from anemia and micronutrient deficiencies, computer assisted learning, vocational education, financial aid in poor rural areas and migrant communities.

While not traditional, ****’s approach to impact evaluation places it at the cutting edge of the development economics field. The group employs quasi-experimental methods, collects exhaustive panel data before and after a program, and conducts large-scale state-of-the-art randomized control trials, or RCTs, all with one purpose in mind: finding out what works, what does not and at what cost.

**** is looking toward expanding it’s current projects on Nutrition, Health and Education; Technology and Education; and Quality and Access to Secondary Education and Beyond, and into other areas where the lives of students across rural China can be improved.

Despite ****’s commitment to academic rigor, it’s the people and their stories that propel ****’s work forward.
