Indian female on women in workplace
This is a short monologue representing the views of a young Indian woman, who is commenting on a scene that learners have just viewed, for a self-paced online training program on diversity & inclusion in the workplace. The entire script is below:

“If this scenario were taking place in India, there would be a lot of similarities. Some of the gender dynamics Joan encountered might be even more pronounced, since changes in women’s roles are more recent here. Traditionally, corporate workplaces in India have been male-dominated, and even in the most diverse organizations, there have been clear demarcations as to what was a “woman’s job” and what was not. One big change is that now men and women are being employed in the same roles.

“Even with the rapidly changing work environment, women are often faced with inappropriate comments and remarks by male colleagues. People often assume that if a woman is married she would not want to travel. Sometimes this is also because of safety concerns.

“In India, the biggest barrier for women is the “double burden” that women carry of looking after home and work. Women at all levels are expected to give higher priority to their family than to their careers. Plus in India, support systems to help women are lacking—for example, child care facilities are scarce. Many women need the support of their parents or their in-laws to continue working once they have children.

“Overall, women in India are looking for the same kind of opportunities as their counterparts in the West. Mentoring, flexible working arrangements, and skill-building initiatives are often cited as the top choices by women in India.”
