As you read thru the script, you both will have the attitude that you're both very comfortable in your roles. Not nervous being interviewed, you know exactly what to say and do. A "been there done that" kinda attitude, but not cocky. Almost knowing what the other person is going to ask/say before they say it. Light and happy. If you are familiar, it would be in the tone of Jim Halpert interviewing Pam from the show "The Office". Or maybe Will Farrell interviewing Tina Fey. I recognize that you are looking for great people who will optimally help you accomplish your business goals.
Employer: Yes, that’s right. And I recognize that you are looking for a place to work in which you feel comfortable and are compensated fairly.
New Employee: That sounds good. I want you to know that I completely understand this is your company and I’m being hired to deliver certain results. If I don’t deliver the results that you want, or in a manner that you desire, I respect your right to find someone who will. If I paid someone to mow my lawn and I wasn’t happy with the results over time, I would find someone who could meet my expectations and hire them. I expect you will do the same.
Employer: Yes, and I respect the fact that you will look elsewhere for employment if I don’t meet your needs for adequate compensation and a feeling of purpose. I believe that if this working relationship is not continually a good fit for both of us, we should go our separate ways.
New Employee: Well said. At this point in time I believe this will be a good fit for me and so I accept the offer.
Employer: Based on your resume and your interview, I believe you will be able to meet my expectations. And, I’d like you to know that it is my responsibility to clearly communicate the results that I expect. How can I expect you to know what success is if I have not defined it for you?
New Employee: I appreciate that. And similarly, if my needs change over time, I will communicate them clearly to you so that you have an opportunity to adapt. I will not leave you hanging or leave without first voicing any concerns that I may have.
Employer: And, I completely understand that you do not yet know what it is like to work here. The 90-day trial period is a chance for both of us to gather more information then decide if we want to continue on with this working relationship. And I won’t try to make you feel guilty if you don’t stay on board. I believe that all people will contribute optimally when they freely choose to be here rather than feeling trapped.
New Employee: And I understand that you are not forcing me to be here. So, I will not treat you as a bad person and gripe about you to all my friends and family members. If I don’t like the job, I can choose to go elsewhere. There’s no benefit to whining and bringing down everyone around me. I’m freely opting into this position.
Employer: Thank you. I intend to give you regular and honest feedback. I will do so with care and compassion and I won’t berate you or make you feel less than. Just because it’s my company doesn’t mean that I have a right to act in a superiority type of manner. If you have a concern or some feedback, I would rather have you voice it than bottle it up and go postal. I have a good record of keeping all employees happy.
New Employee: I respect that. I will voice my concerns maturely and professionally so that we can work out any conflict that is bound to arise. Also, if I don’t deliver the results that you are expecting, I won’t make excuses and expect you to let it slide. You’re not taking on a friendship here, you’re looking for results. I won’t call you names and label you a “terrible boss” if you decide that my employment isn’t working for you. And I won’t expect you to lavish me with thanks and all sorts of praise. I recognize that you are paying me for my work. My paycheck is your “Thank You.”
Employer: I believe this is going to be a fantastic working relationship. I’m really excited. I really do need your help because business has taken off. It’s not easy for me to stir the lemonade and take the customer’s money at the same time. Running this lemonade stand will be much easier with another 8-year old on board. I was starting to get overwhelmed!
