8/15/12 DRAFT
Part 1

In the vicinity of New York’s Hudson River Valley, the Adirondack Mountains, Catskill Mountains,
and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, a group of American painters led by [picture of Thomas Cole] British born artist Thomas Cole, forged an artistic vision of the American wilderness. This was the first American school of painting that emerged between 1825 and approximately 1880. This is where men with the names of Cole, Durand, Cropsey, Bierstadt, and Church would impress the world with their artistic splendor and wondrous vision.

Here lied their future…and their message...

The term, “Hudson River School” was neither self-bestowed nor charitably intended. And while it was not intended as flattering, it was hardly inappropriate. The person responsible for this moniker, first applied around 1879, is not absolutely known, but the term was meant to convey a distinction between two generations of artists and artistic styles. The older painters, who painted between 1825 and 1860, practiced in a mode often self-taught and monopolized by
landscape subject matter.
