How to be a Liberal (Classically)

Number 1: Understanding words

“Liberalism” comes from the Latin liberalis, “of freedom”

It became a powerful ideological force in the 18th century when it stood in stark opposition to the existing trends: Monarchies.

As such, some of the most famous liberals from history are America’s founding fathers.

But wait, today, this group is identified with Conservative thinking... how can this be?

The answer, is that liberalism has changed in the last century. Once “of liberty”, it is now used to mean “of equality”- that, instead of valuing liberty, society should value equality at the expense of freedom.

Milton Friedman, the Nobel winning economist put it perfectly when he said ”A society that puts equality before freedom will get neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both.”

So, the next time you think about your position, ask yourself:

Am I promoting freedom, or equality?
