The world is waiting for change.
In every generation, movements have risen up to be the change. To not settle for the world as it is. To show the world that things can be different. That there is hope. That there is a way forward. That there is a possibility of a better future. That change is possible.
Most people don’t know it, but many of these movements have been started by the church.
In the mid-1800s, it was the American Abolition Society, an organization made up largely of Christian pastors, that helped put an end to slavery.
In the 1700s, it was the church that originally promoted the value of education and established approximately 100 of the first 110 universities in this country, including Princeton, Harvard, and Yale, three of the most prestigious universities in the world.
In the late 1800s. it was the church that started organizations such as the Red Cross and the Salvation Army that today are meeting the needs of millions of people across the world.
In 1960s America, it was Christian pastors such as Martin Luther King, Jr., who boldly and eloquently stood up against the violent and vocal forces of segregation and saw over 200 years of oppression come to an end.
In South Africa, it was the efforts of Christian leaders such as Bishop Desmond Tutu that ended apartheid and gave equal rights back to Black South Africans.
In India, it was Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity that gave a voice to the voiceless and became an example that would touch millions around the world.
The question of our time is not whether the church in the past has been a force for change in this world. And it’s not whether the world today is waiting for change.
The question is who is going to be the change the world is waiting for in this generation?
It’s our turn. Our turn to take up the mantle. Our turn to carry the torch and be a part of a new movement in a new day.
We can show the world that things can be different. We can show them that there is a better future worth living for. We can show them that change is possible.
And you can be a part of it.
There is no difference between Mother Teresa and us. No difference between Martin Luther King and you. The same Spirit and the same power that was in them is in us. It’s in you.
The world is waiting for change.
The church is the change the world is waiting for.
It’s time for them to stop waiting.
The movement starts here. The movement starts now.
