Project Main Details

How Much Is Too Much interactive
"How Much Is Too Much?" is a simulation game that will be installed at the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan, Kan., focusing on the research being done at the Konza Prairie Biological Station on different controlled burning practices and how it affects the prairie ecosystem. Visitors will have to balance the number of "grazers" (bison or cattle) and how long they graze with how often the land is burned. An animation simulation showing the development of the land based on the visitor's choices plays out before their eyes. The goal of the experience is to teach visitors about the practice of controlled burns and how difficult it can be to maintain the balance of the prairie.

We are looking for a narrator to take on the role of a field biologist from Konza, who will guide visitors through the experience and give feedback on the results. Image shows what the field biologist looks like and gives a sense for the graphics in the interactive. We want the field biologist to be approachable and friendly, like a teacher.

Script Details

We want the field biologist to be approachable and friendly, like a teacher.

The folks at Konza Prairie Biological Station and I do a lot of experiments in the Flint Hills on how to best manage the prairie. We and a lot of the ranchers here have discovered that a balance of burning, grazing and water helps make the tallgrass prairie flourish.

If there’s too much or too little of any of these things, the prairie can be in some serious trouble.

Think you’re up for some experimentation of your own? Touch a plot of land to choose which grazers — cattle or bison — you’d like on your land. Remember, different grazers require different management practices.

Use the dials to find what conditions make a healthy balance for the prairie. You can choose how often to burn your land, how many grazers (or cattle) will graze each 100 acres and how long they will graze the pastures.

Since the amount of rain the Flint Hills get is really out of our control, touch the wheel to see how much rain your land will receive.

Touch the “More Info” button under each dial if you need some help.
