Exterior walls exposed to precipitation shall be protected against precipitation ingress by an exterior wall assembly consisting of a first plane of protection and a second plane of protection. The first plane of protection acts to shed the majority of water from entering the wall, and the second plane of protection, also known as the water resistive barrier or sheathing membrane keeps materials further within the wall dry.
In high moisture index regions, like coastal areas, the first and second plane of protection must be separated by a 10 mm or 3/8’s inch capillary break. The capillary break can be omitted where the wall is protected from precipitation such as below large overhangs or verandas. The capillary break can also be omitted where the wall is of sufficient thickness to minimize the transfer of moisture to the interior. These are typically concrete walls referred to as mass walls.
