Like many people, you may already have a smart home that lets you do things like control your lights from your mobile phone. It probably continuously manages your electricity usage so that you can beat quickly rising costs or even win big in neighborhood electricity competitions.
But did you know that a new breed of ********************* can do even more? Now you can install a network of tiny sensors that will monitor the build-up of allergens or toxins inside your house, 24/7. Or add a sensor kit to your refrigerator that will detect when food is starting to go bad. All this information is wirelessly reported to the system’s central receiver, which alerts you when there is a problem.
Got an aging parent you are worried about? Today’s ********** systems can also help you keep an eye on their health. They can detect activity in a house—how long someone has been sitting, how many times the fridge gets opened, even how someone is walking down a hallway. It turns out that all of these readings, especially when taken together, form a pretty accurate snapshot of their health. This peace-of-mind can be streamed to you automatically, over special secure wireless networks, so you never have to wonder if someone is ok.
Several companies are selling these new systems, but the real value comes from a monitoring service that will make sense of all those sensor readings. For monthly fees that start at around $50, you'll get instant reports whenever a potentially serious situation occurs and monthly summaries of the data you are most interested in keeping track of.
But what if your home wasn't just monitoring your health? What if it could predict when something might happen?
A familiar name—Google—is going to help to make that possible. It’s planning to partner with an as yet undisclosed monitoring company to translate all of these sensor readings into what are called "predictive patterns." They’ll be able to look for patterns of early warning signs by comparing your home’s health data to that of thousands of others.
Whether you or a loved one, these predictive health homes can spot a heart attack or stroke days in advance, and when combined with a biosensing “smart” toilet, can detect you’re getting sick long before you feel a thing. More news on this breaking deal tomorrow. . . .
