Proton Beam Therapy

Unlike conventional radiation therapy, proton beam therapy has unique characteristics that focus its energy to the target while restricting the effect to the surrounding healthy tissues. Protons, extracted from hydrogen atoms, are accelerated to 70% of the speed of light by being run through two acceleration stages; linear and synchrotron. Then, the proton beam is extracted and delivered automatically to each destination by Hitachi’s precision control system.

Combined with the high precision patient positioning system, rotating gantry and couch, the accelerated proton beam is delivered to the target tumor in the human body with a sub-millimeter precision.

The proton beam is formed to match with the unique shape of each patient’s tumor.

Hitachi’s spot scanning technology delivers the proton beam in small spots laterally and vertically to cover the entire tumor mass. This spot scanning technology can deliver the proton beam more precisely than the conventional proton scattering technology and it can focus its energy more precisely toward the target tumor.

This precise proton delivery results in low toxicity and it is expected that pediatric patients will benefit most from this spot scanning treatment.

Chemical Analysis System

Hitachi’s Chemical Analysis System is the result of a robotic arm that combines precision accuracy control technology and spectroscopic technology. Superior throughput is achieved through the high-speed link control system, and highly reliable automatic analysis is the result of the accurate sensor technology.

This Chemical Analysis System adopts the common platform module configuration that enables various layouts from small size configuration to vast size configuration with a high degree of freedom.

Semiconductor PET

Hitachi’s Semiconductor PET successfully captures tumor images via human positron CT imaging technology. There are many diagnostic benefits of utilizing this technology.

Imaging Glucose Metabolism
Tumors have their own unique characteristics and therefor their treatment should be unique as well. Some tumors have a “low oxygen area” where treatment is met with high resistance. Using Hitachi’s Semiconductor PET, this low oxygen area image can be acquired with very low invasion.

Clear Imaging
Tumors with uneven characteristics can present challenges for conventional imaging. With Hitachi’s Semiconductor PET, clear images are produced despite an uneven metabolism within the tumor.

Hitachi’s Semiconductor PET is capable of imaging tumor size with a high degree of accuracy while pinpointing the highly active area of the tumor.

Through the use of Hitachi’s Semiconductor PET, precise molecular analysis is possible, thereby allowing customized and gentle treatments for a diverse patient population.


Hitachi is introducing two major technologies in the filed of ultrasound: ultrasonic transducer for breasts and Real-Time Virtual Sonography (RVS) for elastography.

Breast Ultrasound
Through cutting edge CMUT technology, Hitachi is able to offer ultrasonic transducers for breast diagnostics. CMUT technology sends and received ultrasonic waves by producing electronic vibrations from many small drums on silicon wafers. This technology delivers a wider bandwidth and higher resolution image than do conventional transducers.

Real-Time Virtual Sonography
Hitachi utilizes Real-Time Virtual Sonography to detect the stiffness or strain of soft tissues, or elastography. This RVS technology achieves multi-modality diagnosis of tumors by showing same-cut views of CT or MRI images. These images are generated through high-speed calculations ased on the location and angle data of the ultrasonic probes. In order to generate this result, Hitachi developed a DSP computer chip that increases calculation speeds by approximately 20 times.

With these two ultrasound developments, Hitachi is opening a new frontier for the early detection and treatment of tumors.

Advantage MRIs

For decades, MRI technology has been built around the needs of the physicians and technicians, but not the needs of the patients. Closed structures result in claustrophobia, longer scan times, repeat scans, and lower throughput. This is why Hitachi has developed Advantage MRIs, a family of MRIs designed around the shape of the human body.

Oasis is a fully open MRI that accommodates the broadest spectrum of patient types. From bariatric and claustrophobic patients who require extra space, to pediatric and geriatric patients who desire the comfort of holding on to a loved-one, to cases that require extra room for positioning, Oasis meets all patients’ needs without sacrificing scan quality.

Oval is a revolutionary design in MRI. The bore is oval like the human body rather than round like traditional MRI. The larger 74cm bore allows greater freedom for positioning, accommodation of larger patients, and decreased claustrophobia. It delivers all of this with a 1.5T scan.

Both of Hitachi’s Advantage MRIs deliver advantages in patient comfort, scan quality, demographic served and throughput, helping imaging centers achieve extraordinary advantages on all levels.

Information Management

Hitachi Clinical Repository (HCR) enables organized and efficient access to patient data. HCR integrates all of a patient’s data—including profile, accounting, laboratory and pharmacy information—into one easily accessible record. All this information is then available for output in multiple application formats, including PDF, XLS, and HTML. HCR securely stores and archives all this information so that it’s available whenever and however you need it.

Hitachi’s HCR connects patients with hospitals, communities with clinics, pharmacies with imaging centers. HCR integrates with the web of connections that builds a stronger healthcare system and better serves society.
