When it comes to suffering, my question to God is not: “Why, God, have You allowed this to happen to me?” but rather, “Why not me?” It’s sobering to think of all He did for humankind in spite of the way that He was mistreated and misunderstood while on earth, and even more misunderstood today. Because of the shallowness of our spiritual understanding of who Christ is, we often take our own salvation for granted, and, worse yet, twist it into something that we think we deserve. We often carry our faith in Jesus around like we carry credit cards—we pull it out when we need it. In the meantime, our expectations are not seen through the lens of God, but rather through our own superficial “me-centered” world. Most of us expect to be healthy in body, mind and spirit. I used to expect, and even think that it was due me, to have plenty of clothes to wear and food to eat, a car to drive, a house to live in, a husband who loved me as Christ loves the Church and “perfect” children. I thought this was how life should be, not only for myself, but for everyone. God, however, looks at things a little differently than most of us. He, Who is Sovereign and full of all wisdom has a broader and deeper purpose for our lives. It is profoundly simple: God wants us to love Him, to walk with Him, to learn from Him and to celebrate life in Him. One of the most effective ways God gets our attention and changes our focus is through purposeful suffering.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers” (Romans 8:28-29).
Our purpose in life is to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, not to focus on acquiring worldly possessions. This process of growing into a more mature person happens through God’s blessings and through suffering. Both are gifts from God, and, as a result of these things, we are changed to bring Him glory. Christianity is the only religion that sees suffering as a blessing. It is God’s tool to allow us to mature in our faith. When we experience suffering, we will be better equipped to know how to comfort others who are going through similar trials. Maybe suffering is not the curse that we have thought it to be. If we draw closer to God, become more sensitive to other’s suffering and more mature in my understanding of life and death, then I am better for it! In that light, yes, suffering is a blessing.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).
There is suffering to be expected if we are walking obediently in the footsteps of Christ. Look at what Christ went through. It should not surprise us that a multitude of things go sideways when we are living out the Christian worldview. When those who hate what I am doing with my life are attacking me, it is confirmation that I am doing what God has called me to do, because Satan would not be attacking if I were not following Christ!
