Historical Re enactment of Joe at the Alamo ZDLTK12138032708106X
This is for a diorama installation at the new **************************, opening in San Antonio in October. Visitors will see a detailed diorama of the Alamo. Visitors can choose to listen to the audio stories of several important historic characters featured in the diorama.
Joe was an African American born into slavery sometime around 1815. He was owned by Colonel Travis and accompanied him to the Alamo. He fought alongside Travis and survived with minor wounds. Detained briefly by Santa Anna, he was set free to report on the battle to the commanders of the Texas forces. His account was reported in the press on April 11 and 12, 1836. His words are very likely modified by the editors.
Joe is described as being in his early 20s, earnest, maybe a little matter-of-fact.

On Sunday morning at 3 o’clock the guard upon the wall cried out, “Col. Travis, the Mexicans are coming!” ...Colonel Travis sprang from his blanket with his sword and gun, mounted the rampart and seeing the enemy under the mouths of the cannon with scaling ladders, discharged his double barrel gun down upon them. He was immediately shot, his gun falling upon the enemy and himself within the fort. The Mexican General leading the charge mounted the wall by means of a ladder, and seeing the bleeding Travis attempted to behead him. The dying colonel raised his sword and killed him.
