Script Details

Below there is a sample script from a past project, read a portion for auditions.

The attack on the twin towers was so shocking, so utterly unexpected and so devastating in its effect that it simply left everyone grasping for meaning, for an understanding of why it happened. But it also immediately meant that we as knights of Columbus recognized that as a society that was founded on the principle of helping widows and orphans that we clearly had a responsibility to help here.

I always remember the morning of 9-11, being in my office, getting the news that something had happened in New York, turning the television on, calling in my fellow officers and watching as the plane hit the second building. We decided right then that the Knights of Columbus had to do something to help and from the Supreme Council the very next day we established a program that we c5alled the “Heroes Fund.”

And so what we did was create a fund eventually more than a million and a quarter dollars to help the families of the men and women in the police and fire and emergency response units who died that day in the line of duty.

We knew that many of those families would be in need of immediate assistance and insurance, government aid other types of program would take weeks, months maybe even years to reach these families. But through our network of insurance agents we were able to begin to deliver checks to the families of deceased firemen, policemen, rescuers, beginning that same Friday.

No matter what house I went into the majority of them had young children. And to see those young children and to think in my head that those children are now fatherless it was very heart breaking.

Mario first called me to tell me that he had a check for me and my children. And he was very kind and came over no questions asked and presented me with a check.

My husband was a wonderful person very caring, kind, would do anything for anyone. A great dad he was always with his children. I am very glad that Dan joined the Knights of Columbus because I don’t have to worry about my children now, their college is being paid for. My husband would be very thankful for everything that is being done for my children and myself.

Fr. McGivney when he set up the Knights of Columbus never envisioned something like 9-11. But I think he did envision the need to take care of people and as a member of the Knights of Columbus I am very proud of that.

God was present in the many police officers, fire fighters and rescue workers who went into that building. Greater love than this has no man than to lay down his life for one’s friend. And many of those people were not friends but they gave of themselves and I think that’s really what the Knights are doing also. The creation of the Heroes Fund is really a response from the Knights of Columbus of what they’re really based on, living out the gospel of love.

Knights of Columbus frequently respond well before official responders when it comes to helping people in a time of crisis. It was certainly true after 9-11 where Knights of Columbus provided meals and help to people who were fleeing the destruction.
We really had to do something and feeding the rescue workers was an idea so we got a few guys together started cooking up some meals and we cooked for about 250 maybe 300 people. We knew it was going to go a long time so we did it for another 28 days. It made us feel like we were doing some small part for the country and families.

On the fateful day of 9-11 I was the acting battalion chief of the FDNY marine division and I survived. There is no doubt that I am a different person from that morning until today. I know that when I raise my flag it is in memory of all my friends that died on 9-11. What I have been given is another chance in life. I have come to understand what giving is all about. I need to and I will give back. It is what the Knights of Columbus have always shown me for 38 years. And that’s why I’m a member of the Knight of Columbus.
