Project Main Details

Hiromi Aoki Lerner

"********" will be an animated science fiction series about the first settlers on the Moon. Our tagline is "Someone has to be crazy enough to go first!"

It's largely driven by character humor (and drama) as well as the hard-SF near-future (2040) setting -- both of which are informed by our many years' experience with space development advocates and professionals.

The pilot episode is titled "********************" and tells the story of how the youngest of the colonists, Georgiana Lerner, gets to the Moon (prior to which, there were "no children in space"), establishing many of the basic themes of the series along the way, as well as handling some important technical expositionm, setting, and characterization.

This call is for the part of HIROMI LERNER, who is Georgiana's mother.

This is a PRINCIPAL part for the pilot and will become a SERIES REGULAR part if we receive funding for additional episodes.

She is a 2nd-Generation Japanese-American ("nisei") who has spent some time in Japan with her maternal grandmother, as well as in the USA and Canada. She should therefore be natively-fluent in English (she should probably still have some of her childhood Californian accent, though her travels will have affected her accent).

She should, however, also be fluent in Japanese, though it's okay for her to have an American accent in Japanese.

There will be little or no Japanese in the pilot episode, but there should be some later in the series (provided we have a voice actress who can handle this).

Final submissions will be in FLAC or WAV format. Performances will require online participation in a "table read" for each script. We plan to schedule these on Saturdays, but there is some flexibility about scheduling (it will have to be arranged with the other actors).

Compressed audio (such as MP3) is okay for auditions.

I've quoted just one line from the script here -- we'd like to hear you deliver this line as written (i.e. in English) and then paraphrase in Japanese as a test (since we don't have actual Japanese dialog at this point). The attached "script" is actually the side we'd ask you to read to audition for the part if we like the sample.

This scene is from the pre-flight press conference in "No Children in Space". It's the year 2040. Hiromi is about to board a Soyuz-SF launch vehicle along with her daughter Georgiana and the pilot, Sergei Titov, to go to the International Space Station and then transfer to shuttle which will take them to the Moon to join her husband Rob Lerner and the other colonists at the colony site. This is the first time anyone as young as Georgiana has gone into space, and the reporters are asking her questions about that.

This is a very low budget "free culture" production, which is not exactly the same as saying it is "non-profit", but there are similarities. The work will be released online under the ***********************************************. There is no meaningful concept of "piracy" for this type of release, since all copying is legitimate, so long as attribution is kept and all copies are released under the same terms.

For money, we rely on fan-funding through crowd-funding before release (Kickstarter) and 'creator endorsed' sales after release (i.e. sales with trademarked "proceeds support the artists" labeling).

If we get more funding in, then it will be more like a commercial project and it will probably continue for some time. We intend to nurse this project through the first "block" of episodes (5 in all) on minimal crowd-funding support if necessary in order to kickstart the series, but our goal is to get at least to our "basic funding" level for the pilot and, if possible, raise funds to cover the next few episodes as well.

Extremely over-simplified version:

* $200 equipment budget - guaranteed at "minimum funding" on our Kickstarter.
* $800 per recording day - first priority for "basic funding", number of days depends on funding level
* About 1% creator-endorsed sales profit - after basic funding for all funded episodes (see details)

The detailed version is on the website at **************************************************and I'll be happy to answer questions

Audition for HIROMI
I guess we supposed that we would get by.

And let me take this time to say that what we are doing, taking my daughter with me to space, is no different than what colonists have always done. When the first immigrants went to colonize the Americas it was, by no stretch of the imagination, safe. But people took their families with them. The family is the basic unit of society. You cannot start a new culture, a new society with only single men and women. We need families to make settlements and that means children.

But aren’t you afraid that GEORGIANA might die in the harsh reality that is space?

She could die here. Of diseases spread by overcrowding. Of natural disaster. Of crime.

Honestly I think that she will be much safer there than here. This is not a decision that we took lightly or without thought. We evaluated everything. We created custom space suits, redesigned spaces in the vehicle. A massive amount of design work has gone into making sure that Georgy will have the safest trip possible. Honestly this trip to the Moon will actually be less dangerous than driving Georgy to school for a year.

Also, I can’t help but think that the best place for a child is with her parents.
