SCENE VIDEO AUDIO
1SFX: Sound of crickets chirping and night birds singing.
We open on a stately looking Victorian home at twilight. It’s the home of Congressman Davis on South Queen St. in Lancaster, PA. It’s Spring– 1903. We see a bright light shining in a darkened study on the first floor of the home. The light is that of an old “Magic Lantern” projector. We hear the voices of four men- Howard BOMBURGER , Mr. Harris, Mr. Cole –local businessman in Lancaster- and Congressman Davis. VOICES:
CONGRESSMAN DAVIS: Good evening my friends. So glad you could be here tonight.
MR. COLE: Our pleasure, Congressman.
MR. HARRIS: Are we having a “Magic Lantern Show” ?
CONGRESSMAN DAVIS: Yes, indeed. But first, I believe you both know Howard Bomburger. He’s a friend of Henry Hershey, Milton’s father.
MR. HARRIS: Good to see you, Howard.
2.We see three men’s shadows in the foreground darkened study shaking hands, greeting each other, taking their seats for the Congressman’s “Magic Lantern Show.” MR. COLE: Yes, Howard..good to see you. But, now, set us straight on this rumor. Is Milton Hershey really intending to build a new candy factory?
BOMBURGER : It’s true. But, that’s only part of it. He also plans to build a new town.
MR. HARRIS: “A new town?” Forgive me, Howard, but that sounds a little bit crazy, don’t you think?
BOMBURGER: Not if you know Milton Hershey.
3CONGRESSMAN DAVIS: All right now, gentlemen. Before we pass judgment, let’s take a look at the facts, shall we?
4(NOTE: At this point , the Congressman’s “Magic Lantern Show” begins. Each of the slides we see on the screen will be stylized to appear as if done about “1900”. From time to time, we will also see the shadows of our audience of three men pointing to slides on the theater screen and commenting. COLE: All right…
HARRIS: I’m for that!
5 We see a photo of the Lancaster Caramel Company . We follow it with photo of Milton and Kitty on a boat in Europe. Source: HCA
CONGRESSMAN: Now then, we know that Milton sold his Lancaster Caramel Company in August ,1900…that’s nearly three years ago. And, we know that afterwards, he and Kitty went off to Europe.
6 We see Harris’s shadow as he points to the screen shot above HARRIS: Made sense…
COLE: Yes, they certainly had the money to do it. Might even have considered retiring
7 CONGRESSMAN: Yes, but Milton’s not done that. In fact, he’s gone back to work.
8 We see a photo of workers in the chocolate wing of the Lancaster Caramel Company. Source: HCA COLE: That’s true. He did keep a wing of the Caramel Company for his chocolate business.
9 Same as above, but with the shadow of H. BOMBURGER this time pointing to the screen BOMBURGER: And, he’s turning a healthy profit, too.
HARRIS : Which means?
10 Photos of the Hershey’s chocolate products – circa 1898- 1900 - Source: HCA CONGRESSMAN: “Which means…” he now most likely needs room to expand his chocolate business.
11 Shadow of COLE pointing to the screen COLE: Fair enough, a new factory. But why a new town?
12 CONGRESSMAN: I think I just might know why. Observe, please…
13 Jacob Riis photos of “Bandit’s Roost” and other slum scenes. Source : MoMA. We also see shadow of HARRIS in the foreground pointing to the screen HARRIS: Say, that’s the Bowery of New York City!
14 We see more Jacob Riis photos of poverty among industrial orkers in NYC in 1900 CONGRESSMAN: Correct ! Hard living conditions for lots of factory workers in big cities like New York these days.
15 COLE: But, what does that have to do with Milton Hershey?
16 We see a photo of Milton Hershey’s candy shop in New York in the 1880s. We also see more shots of poor immigrant factory workers in NYC. Sources: HCA and MoMA BOMBURGER: Plenty! Don’t forget, when Milton was a young man, he had a candy shop in New York .
CONGRESSMAN: True…And, he used to make deliveries to retailers in some of these bleak spots.
17 COLE: So, he felt badly for those people?
18 We see the famous Lewis Hine photo of an Italian family just off the boat in NYC- circa 1900. Source: MoMA BOMBURGER: Undoubtedly! After all, most of them were immigrants, right off the boat. Probably couldn’t afford even a penny candy.
19 CONGRESSMAN: We also know that later, when Milton became successful and started to travel, he found out about the “reform movement” in England to build better neighborhoods for industrial workers..
20 We see sketches and photos of Saltaire, England in the 1880s and 1890s. – Source: Saltaire Museum CONGRESSMAN: …Places like “Saltaire” …built by Titus Salt, the textile king, to get his workers out of the slums of Bradford…
21 We see a photo of Port Sunlight . Source: Port Sunlight Museum CONGRESSMAN:…and ” Port Sunlight”…
22 Photo of the Lever Brothers: source: Port Sunlight Museum COLE: Say, isn’t that where “Lever Brothers Soap” comes from?
23 More photos appear of Port Sunlight CONGRESSMAN: Yes, and there’s a “garden village” at Port Sunlight, founded by the Lever Brothers to house their employees and pensioners.
24 We see a photo of Cadbury Chocolate advertisement- circa 1900. Source: Cadbury CONGRESSMAN: And, that’s not the only “garden village” in England. Ever heard of “Cadbury Chocolate”?
25 We see BOMBURGER’s shadow now as he points to the screen BOMBURGER: Hah! Milton Hershey sure has!
26 We see photos of “Bourneville”, England- circa 1900- built by the Cadbury Family – Source:
Cadbury or Cadbury website CONGRESSMAN: Precisely! And, chances are he’s also heard about “Bourneville.” It’s the English garden village that George and John Cadbury built to house their employees.
29 We see COLE’s shadow in the foreground, pointing to the screen, observing the impressive scenes of Bourneville, England at turn of century COLE: Hmmm… spiffy cottages , flower and vegetable gardens… Impressive!
30 HARRIS: (To the Congressman) So, you’re saying that Milton Hershey visited these places on his trips abroad?
31 CONGRESSMAN: I’m not saying there’s proof he has. But, I am saying he knows about ‘em. He also knows about this place….
32 We see photos of the Columbian World’s Exposition- 1893. Source: HCA COLE: “The Columbian World’s Exposition” in Chicago.
33 More photos of the Columbian World’s Exposition CONGRESSMAN: Right you are! The “Great White City “ – a showcase for the best ideas and inventions in the world.
34 BOMBURGER: That’s where Milton Hershey bought his first chocolate-making machinery , about ten years ago.
35 CONGRESSMAN: And, while Milton was there he also may, and I say “may”. have visited a place not far from Chicago ….
36 We see a photo of Pullman City – Source: Pullman Museum HARRIS : “PULLMAN, Illinois”
37 We see more photos of Pullman City CONGRESSMAN: Right again! …The town built by George Pullman to house workers from his railcar plant. Clean neighborhoods with rented houses…
38 We see a photo of George Pullman. We also HARRIS in the foreground, pointing to the screen. HARRIS: Yes, but “Pullman” had problems…
39 We see photos of Pullman workers and their families- Source: All of this is Pullman Museum CONGRESSMAN: Indeed it did. When the Depression of ’93 hit , orders for rail cars dropped, and so did Pullman workers salaries . But , the rent on workers’ houses stayed the same. And, George Pullman took the rent right out of their meager paychecks! It led to,,,
40 We see dramatic sketch of Pullman strike COLE: The Pulllman Strike!…
42 We see dramatic sketch of Pullman Riot HARRIS: And, the Pullman Riot!!
43 We see Pullman, Illinois in disrepair…people have left CONGRESSMAN: Hmmm, yes… unfortunate indeed.
44 We see BOMBURGER shadow in foreground pointing to screen BOMBURGER: But, that won’t happen to Milton Hershey! He’s a fair man. He cares about people and their future!
45 We see a photo of a prosperous Milton Hershey – Source: HCA
We see HARRIS’s shadow pointing to screen HARRIS: All right, all right… Let’s say Milton DOES build this new chocolate factory, AND a new town. But, how’s his town going to be different from any of these others you’ve shown us?
46 We see COLE’s shadow pointing to screen COLE: Yes! How’s he going to “Imagine Utopia” here in central Pennsylvania?
47 CONGRESSMAN: I think we just might have a clue or two…
48 HARRIS: Such as?....
49 We see photos of Derry Township, Derry Church and Palmyra, PA in 1890s. Source : HCA
More of above BOMBURGER: Well, he’s already started to buy up property all over Derry Township.
COLE: Why? There’s nothing out there but farm fields and dairies!
50 We see photos of small daiiries in the Derry Township, and outlying areas- circa 1900-1905. Source: HCA CONGRESSMAN: Exactly! Lots and lots of dairies. Dairies to provide his chocolate factory with fresh milk, and plenty of it. There’s something else out there too.
51 HARRIS: “Rail lines?”
52 We see photos of railroads – Reading and Lehigh- circa 1903 , in the Pennsylvania rural areas CONGRESSMAN: “Rail lines”…precisely! “Trains” for bringing in raw materials, like box cars of “sugar” maybe? And for shipping finished products out, like Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bars, maybe?
53 HARRIS: All right, but the town…what about the town?
54 We see photos of Fanny Hershey and of Henry Hershey- Source : HCA BOMBURGER: Well, don’t forget that Milton’s been influenced mightily by his mother’s Mennonite upbringing, and his father’s penchant for invention.
55 HARRIS: (considering) Sooo… you think that might lead Milton Hershey to build a “model industrial town” the like of which the world has never seen.
56 We see photos, stylized as if in a Victorian dream, of actual scenes in Hershey, PA – circa 1913 (as if projecting into the future)
(Note: Boston Productions will stylize the “dreamy” look , as if it’s the Congressman’s “imagining” of M.S. Hershey’s model industrial town, ten years in the future. ) CONGRESSMAN: (chuckling) Well… None of us has a crystal ball. But, I can imagine a place with houses “owned”, not rented, by Hershey’s workers. Tree-lined streets, a public park, plenty of recreation for everyone …a place where there’s no unhappiness…a place that workers and their families are proud to call their “hometown”
57 We see a photo of Milton Hershey at the High Point Mansion CONGRESSMAN: Yes, gentlemen…I’m no seer. But, if I can imagine such a “model town, “ right in Derry Township, then it’s my opinion that the “Chocolate King” himself is already hard at work making his dream a reality!
58 We see the shadows of COLE and HARRIS and BOMBURGER in the foreground of the screen shaking hands COLE: Fascinating!
HARRIS: Who would have thought it?
59 BOMBURGER: “Milton Hershey” apparently has!
60 CONGRESSMAN: (chuckling) Yes, Howard…I believe you’re right…I believe you are right
