SOUNDS CONVERSATION

NOTE: The programmed lighting in this area will affect the look of the busy Lancaster Caramel Company’s Church Street factory in the hot summer of 1893.

LOOPING AMBIENCE: A low level ambient sound track will loop around the outside of the Caramel Company structure suggesting sounds of Church St. in Lancaster circa Summer, 1893 - foot traffic, birds singing, horse drawn vehicles. etc. ,

EXTERIOR PORT: On a timed basis, we will also hear an exterior-specific set of sounds that depict a loading operation outside the Lancaster Carmel Company on Church St. on that same summer’s day –e.g. we may hear a conveyer belt sending packaged boxes of caramels to a loading crew , who then pack them onto a waiting freight wagon.

INTERIOR PORT SOUNDS : As we approach the structure, our visitors will hear the interior sounds of Lancaster Caramel Company operations in the red brick factory on Church Street in Lancaster – Summer, 1893 - including steam-heated kettles, molten caramel being cooled by blowers, workers pulling caramel into shape, cutting, wrapping, boxing sounds.

SOUNDS CONVERSATION

INTERIOR PORT CONVERSATION: We will also hear dialogue between Milton S. Hershey and his account/bookkeeper Lebbie Lebkicher LEBBIE LEBKICHER: Milton, have you seen the 1893 sales figures for your “ Crystal A” Caramels? They are going through the roof!

Interior sounds and conversation continue on this track as described on previous page M.S. HERSHEY: I know, Lebbie. And to think it all started with one big order from an importer in Great Britain.

LEBBIE L. : It’s the wholesome milk in those caramels that does it, Milton. Why you’re the “Caramel King!”

M.S. HERSHEY: Maybe… But, I’m not content with simply selling quality caramels. I’m going to go visit our western branch in Chicago. My cousin Frank Snavely is managing things well there, but…(pauses)

LEBBIE L.: “But” what?

M.S. HERSHEY: Well, we just may buy some chocolate-making equipment at the World’s Columbian Exposition.

LEBBIE L.: “Chocolate-making” ?

M.S. HERSHEY: Yes, Lebbie. You see, I think caramels are a fad. But, “chocolate”…yes, chocolate’s the future!
