We expect our community’s children to be healthy and thriving. But in Dallas County, this often isn’t the case. When it comes to our children’s health, we’re facing a tragedy — the loss of a productive, healthy future. Our children’s health and wellness isn’t good — and it’s getting worse.

Nearly a quarter of our kids live in poverty. More than 20 percent don’t have health insurance. Many don’t have a pediatrician, so unnecessary ER visits are on the rise. And Dallas’s rates of chronic conditions, such as asthma, obesity and diabetes, are much higher than those of other communities.

Why is this a tragedy? Because health is tied to every area of a child’s life: her ability to go to school, play with her friends, spend time with her family — and eventually get a job and contribute to society.

Take a look at one family — a single mother whose son has asthma. Because she doesn’t have health insurance, she can’t take her son to regular health check-ups, and she can’t afford to pay for asthma medicine. When her son has an asthma attack, her only choice is to take him to the most expensive place to be treated: the emergency room. They stay in the ER late into the night, making them both too tired to perform well at school and work.

To prevent asthma attacks, the mother tells her son not to run or ride his bike. Not to play. Not to exert himself at all — otherwise, she fears, they may end up back in the ER. She worries that his school, which is in an older area of town, doesn’t have the money to keep its classrooms clean — and that all that dust will trigger an asthma attack.

The boy feels different than other kids and has trouble playing with, or even making friends. He doesn’t do well at school because he’s always tired. He gains weight because he doesn’t get much exercise. How can this boy be expected to reach his full potential?

Thousands of Dallas kids live like this, which places an unfair burden on children and their families — and on the health care system.

But we can change this — and the Health and Wellness Alliance for Children is taking bold steps to do so.

What is the Alliance? We are a coalition of community members determined to bend trends and improve the overall health and wellbeing of all children.

There are dozens of community organizations that are members of the Alliance. We are the voice of at-risk children and their families, social services, school systems, faith-based organizations, hospitals, government, and donors.

Nonprofit groups do great work in specific areas of need. But the Alliance is uniquely focused on the integrated nature of health, housing, education, safety and financial security.

We work within a collective impact model, meaning that we involve participants across many different sectors and have a clearly defined, common goal. All of our activities are coordinated so that we make measureable progress.

If this sounds ambitious, it is. That’s why we’re starting with one condition — childhood asthma. More than 60,000 children in Dallas — almost enough to fill Cowboys Stadium — suffer from this chronic illness.

There are a lot of health issues that demand our community’s attention. But to make a measureable difference, the Alliance has to start with one area. The Alliance will use its experience with asthma to expand to other areas in the near future.

The challenge is immense but, collectively, we are more than up to the task. We can, and we will, improve the wellbeing of our children.
