As an alternative to Medigap, there is an additional Medicare option called Part C or Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by Medicare approved insurance companies in place of your Medicare coverage. This option typically combines Parts A (hospital), B (medical) and potentially D (prescription), as well as other potential out-of-pocket costs. Costs and coverage varies by plan. If you have Medicare Advantage, you do not need Medigap.
While Medicare Parts A and B are fairly standard, some of the plans I just mentioned have a multitude of options, each with varying coverage and cost. For example, Medigap has 10 options (referred to as Plans A–N), with Plan N premiums averaging $28 per month in 2010 and Plan F averaging $171 per month. That's a great range of cost. But, to put that in perspective, Plan F is the most commonly selected plan and it covers Medicare Part A and B deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance; on the other hand, Plan N doesn’t cover co-pays or Part B deductibles. So while it may be tempting to select the cheapest option, it’s critical to understand what is covered and select a plan that fits your needs. Otherwise, your out-of-pocket costs might actually be higher.
