Project Main Details
I'm Charlie Teljeur the director and writer of a documentary currently in production that tells the story of tiny Haliburton, Ontario which has a big name in the world of professional hockey. It has produced a disproportionate amount of talent for the NHL and the area is inhabited by a lot of current and former NHL personalities. In short, it's almost a magical hockey town and that (so far untold) story is what we're delivering.
As the narrator you are an inquisitive outsider. You're NOT a reporter (no news anchor voices please) but interested in getting to the bottom of this intriguing anomaly. Step by step you will ask the questions and guide the points the viewers will be thinking. Your voice will ask the questions and tell the story, as if you came to this town to investigate this and this is your report.
The voice I'm after a tricky mix of homey and authoritative. No newsmen, no slick radio voices - you need to sound like an inquisitive soul. Tip more towards the Everyman than the pro reporter. Find that correct voice.
In all honesty I would prefer if this voice were someone from Canada since it's such a Canadian story but I'm open to anyone from anywhere who sounds good. Please be able to pronounce "hockey" properly. In this sense, please no strong accents and no characters - it has to feel honest and real.
There is a real hominess to this story that has to be found and I hope you can find it.
As far as a fee that needs to be determined. A fairly standard VO for an hour doc but nothing overwhelming. The occasional narration guidance whenever needed. Please quote accordingly.
The sample script is a variety of portions of the story. They're not really connected thematically. I just want you to see samples of the tone and aim of who you'll be portraying.
I look forward to what your talents can do with this sample script. I'll know the right voice when I hear it.

SO WHAT'S THE COMMON THREAD BETWEEN THESE FOUR PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY PLAYERS? WHAT CONNECTS RON STACKHOUSE TO BERNIE NICHOLLS TO MATT DUCHENE (DOO-SHANE) TO CODY HODGSON (HOD-SON)?
THE ANSWER REALLY ISN'T AS MUCH A QUESTION OF WHAT AS IT IS A QUESTION OF WHERE, AS IN WHERE THESE MEN ARE FROM. WHERE THEY WERE BORN, THE PLACE THEY ALL GREW UP AND THE TINY ONTARIO VILLAGE THEY STILL CALL “HOME.”
TO KNOW HALIBURTON IS TO KNOW A PLACE SEEMINGLY PUT ON EARTH TO CREATE HOCKEY PLAYERS. WHEN YOU'RE SURROUNDED BY HUNDREDS OF LAKES THAT, UPON WINTER'S ARRIVAL, MAGICALLY TRANSFORM INTO HUNDREDS OF OUTDOOR HOCKEY RINKS, YOU HAVE, QUITE LITERALLY, A NATURAL ADVANTAGE.
TO START WITH, IS THE HALIBURTON HOCKEY ANOMALY EVEN AN ANOMALY AT ALL? CAN A TOWN OF 4500 (FORTY FIVE HUNDRED) THAT'S PRODUCED FOUR NHLERS TOTALING MORE THAN 2300 (TWENTY THREE HUNDRED) GAMES AND OVER 1900 (NINETEEN HUNDRED) POINTS - AND COUNTING - REALLY CLAIM AN “EXTRAORDINARY” STATUS? STATISTICALLY HOW DOES THAT COMPARE TO OTHER TOWNS AND CITIES WHO'VE CREATED HOCKEY STARS OF THEIR VERY OWN? IN ALL HONESTY, HOW MUCH OF A STORY IS THIS STORY?
