Before our oldest son, Tom, was diagnosed at age 8, we’d never heard of Asperger Syndrome, yet it had affected almost every aspect of our family life. We were loving, attentive parents, but in spite of our efforts, our child’s behavior was uncontrollable at times, and we struggled with self-doubts. We tried our best, but we were flying blind, not knowing that Asperger Syndrome was the underlying issue. Embarrassment and oversensitivity to judgment over our son’s behavior often led us astray, and although it didn’t feel right, sometimes we caved in to pressure to conform to more rigid forms of parenting.
