Give Clean Water is on a mission to do just that by giving clean drinking water to everyone in Fiji who needs it.
In just 3 years, over 32,000 people around the world now have clean drinking water thanks to Give Clean Water. Newbreak has played a major role in making that happen as Give Clean Water got its start as a 501c3 non-profit right here. Many of you know first-hand what it's like to go into a village who once drank dirty, bacteria filled water every day, and after a few hours of water filter installations, everyone in the village now had a lifetime of clean drinking water!
Eradicating the water crisis in a country takes a thorough process of execution. Give Clean Water uses a 4 step process to do that, working directly with the Fiji Health ministry, village Head men, and community leaders like those who come from the International Rescue Center. The health ministry helps identify the most urgent areas of water crisis. Once determined, Give Clean Water goes into action.
A state of the art water filter is used in each home that installs in minutes. The pore size in this gravity fed filter is so small, that no bacteria can pass through it. A simple back-flush cleaning is all that is needed to ensure a lifetime of clean drinking water for a family.
Step one involves collecting biographical data and GPS coordinates from each person in a water crisis village. The data includes basic information on the family, their current water source, and their general health. All these villages have frequent cases of diarrhea, and some typhoid outbreaks.
Step two uses a team of volunteers, lead by the GCW staff, health ministry, community leaders, and volunteers, to install the water filters in each home, and teach basic hygiene.
Step 3 and 4 involve two follow ups in the first year, lead by the GCW staff and community leaders, making sure each family's filter is working properly, and documenting changes in health. This follow up is critical in solving the water crisis in Fiji, and is what sets Give Clean Water apart from most non-profits, providing documented proof that these water filters ARE solving the water crisis in this country.
Omar received his filter in July of 2011.
These water filters are breaking down cultural walls and creating great relationships and conversation pieces between the community leaders and the villages. Mohammed is the head man of his Muslim mosque and recently spoke of how the water filters are not only making a difference in his village, but also the Muslim school across the street from where he lives.
If you ever wondered how you could be a part of changing the world, now you know. Imagine giving clean water to everyone in Fiji in the next 10 years. Give Clean Water is well on its way to do just that, already giving clean drinking water to an area the size of Tierrasanta. Fiji is only 3/4 the size of San Diego. Do you see how tangible this is?
And if we can change a country, why not the world?
