Script Details

***custom demo required***
In Washington, D.C., old shipping containers from the Port of Baltimore have been given a creative new function…

They're being used to build low-cost housing.
The containers—previously used to ship cargo around the world on ships, trains, and trucks—were chosen for several reasons:

They're cheap compared to other building materials…
they can be put together quickly and in many different types of locations…
and, as architect Travis Price says, there are many of them sitting unused in port cities around the country.

For the project's first building, eighteen containers will be stacked and welded together to create a three-story building, with each floor containing a single apartment of six bedrooms, six bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room.

Openings are cut into the steel walls to create windows and doors,
and the containers are well-insulated and have been designed to save energy.
Built near a university, the owners plan to rent the units to college students.

If the building becomes popular, Price hopes to expand the project. He envisions barges full of shipping container apartments floating on rivers, providing hundreds of residents with low-cost, energy-saving housing.
