Probably yes—possibly no.
Africa is one of the fastest-growing regions of the developing world….
…but it faces big challenges on its way to arriving as a 21st-century economic force.
About half of the continent’s 900 million people live on only $1.25 a day. Drought and insufficient capacity continue to take their harsh toll.
Remarkably, the growth of Africa’s economies has continued to outpace those of almost every other region in the world.
Over the past decade, six of the world’s 10 fastest growing economies were from Africa.
And several of its largest countries will likely hit a 10 percent growth rate.
Fueling this astonishing growth are high prices for African commodities like metals, minerals and oil.
They’ve driven a 200 percent increase in trade with the rest of the world since 2000.
African trade with the BRIC countries, today at 20 percent, is expected to reach 50 percent by 2030.
This seismic shift is changing Africans’ lives.
Small businesses in the commodity trade are fast becoming entrepreneurs; cities are growing.
But there’s another major roadblock ahead.
Currently, Africa spends $45 billion a year on infrastructure – but it’s not enough.
Only one in three rural Africans has access to an all-season road.
Only one-fifth of people in sub-Saharan Africa can get electricity.
Improving operational efficiencies will help – but it won’t be enough.
Over the next decade, it will cost an estimated 93 billion dollars every year to build the power plants, roads, transportation services, and irrigation systems that the continent needs.
It’s a huge investment—but a huge opportunity.
An investment that will help keep this new economic engine from sputtering—and keep Africa on course toward a better life for its people, and for us all.
