When it’s cold outside and the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius, water freezes. It changes from a liquid into a solid.
You can see it on a winter day. Rain turns into snow, and water turns into ice.
If you could see inside water you'd see lots of molecules, each with one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. H2O. When water is liquid, the molecules move around, like busy bees. When water freezes, they slow down and line up, like toy soldiers. Now they are farther apart, so ice is less dense, or lighter than water. That’s why ice floats. But ice is also hard like a rock, so you carve it with a chainsaw. That makes ice very special.
Would you like to go on a Big Adventure with ice, all around the world? Welcome to The BIG Freeze!
