I am a Khmer national, born and raised in the country of Cambodia. I had no money or income. I did not have enough to support my wife who was pregnant and almost at full term.

I struggled with not having enough money to support my wife who was pregnant and almost about to give birth. I wanted to go look for work and I never had any intention of crossing into Thailand. I only wanted to find work within the towns near the [Thai] border so that I could send money back to my wife to have our baby.

I looked out and saw a lot of boats. I thought to myself that I am probably going to be sold off onto a boat. I knew they were going to sell us because we were at a seaport. And also if in fact we were actually going to do a normal type of job, why would they then have to lock us up? I thought about that.

I wanted to escape and ask the others to go with me, but many were too afraid to risk it. First of all, we were afraid because we did not know the area nor the laws of the country. Others were afraid because we heard that if we escaped, they would catch us and shoot us to death. There were many fears. I felt that if I had been alone, I would have run away by myself. But I was afraid that if I ran away alone, it would adversely affect the others. I had to think about the others as well.
