Script Details

***custom demo required***
Here we have one square. But sometimes we want to talk about PARTS of the square. Numbers that are parts of a whole are called fractions. This colored section is a fraction of the whole square.

We write this faction one over four, or we say “one-fourth”. One-fourth is the fraction for what we see here, in this example.

In a fraction, THIS number is called the numerator.

The numerator represents the part of the whole that we’re talking about. In the example, one part of the whole square is colored in , so 1 is our numerator.

In a fraction, THIS number is called the denominator. You can remember this by saying, “The denominator is down.”

The denominator represents the total number of parts in the whole square. In the example, the total number of parts is 4, so 4 is the denominator.
