Script Details

***Please read attached script interpretatively, without highly dramatizing, at a decent pace.

Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago, is the second most populous area of law enforcement in the United States, after Los Angeles. In 2008, more than 40,000 foreclosures were served there. Each day, often without warning, people were met at the door by sheriff’s deputies telling them to pack and leave their homes forever. Until one day it stopped.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced he had served his last eviction--until the foreclosing banks met their obligation to provide both proper notice and the necessary paperwork to justify foreclosure.

The Illinois Bankers Association leapt to accuse Dart of “ignoring his legal responsibilities”. He was a “vigilante” shirking his duty and they threatened to find him in contempt of court.

But was he being an “activist” sheriff? Was he overstepping?
