With volatile market prices and vulnerability of small farmers to climatic change, some small but effective measures were taken to maintain their livelihoods and improve food security for their survival. A 3 year project, focused especially on small women farmers provided training on new farming techniques with provision of quality seed, fertiliser and agriculture implements. Along with training on soil leveling, livestock management and kitchen gardening these small farmers were formed into organisations. As an organisation the farmers are able to sell directly to the market and be free from dependence on middleman’s low rates and high interest payments. These farmers now have enough to put more than one meal a day on the table and send their children to school. They are also preparing to be more resilient to future unexpected climatic changes through grain banks and crop insurance.

Life is changing for many, but for some like Naseem, it is finally changing for the better. Resident of a small village in Sindh, Naseem is a farmer turned entrepreneur of a local female farmer organisation founded under Oxfam. Drawing women like Naseem outside their traditionally invisible and underappreciated role, the local organisation has offered hope and opportunity to small-scale women farmers. The 20-member group received collective credit and low-cost seed and fertilizer to cultivate their lands and secure food for their families. Reaping returns in form of higher crop production, surplus seed for future cultivation and income for their households, female farmers are taking charge of their lives and living.
