Life can have strange twists and turns. I know this from my own experience. Had you asked me while I was studying at New York University “Vivian, will you ever write a book about osteoporosis?” my answer would have been “Osteoporosis? Why? It’s such a rare condition!” Don’t be surprised: osteoporosis is a relatively new “disease”. You see, back in the seventies and eighties, someone had to actually suffer a low-impact or fragility fracture to be diagnosed with osteoporosis. But then in 1994 osteoporosis was transformed into a “disease” of fracture risks, and became a world-wide epidemic almost overnight. There’s more about this later.

What Is Osteoporosis?

It is very interesting to take a look at how the mainstream health media defines osteoporosis. Deep inside the game of words used to catalog it as a disease, we will find, as we breakdown its “official” definition, that it is in fact, not a disease. Let’s get started then with Merck’s definition:

“Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture” (www.Merck-Medicus.com, June 2001).

For the sake of simplicity, let’s breakdown this sentence and analyze its parts:
