NARRATOR: A display of flesh-colored mounds and protuberances lie on stretchers swathed in blue fabric. The strange tableau invites multiple symbolic readings: is this the decaying remains of a family meal, a grisly wartime scene, or a sacrificial offering? Surrounding it, looming white boxes alternately assume the guise of protective sentinels, combative challengers, and silent mourners.
The bulbous masses recall Bourgeois’s seminal work, The Destruction of the Father, a fantasy in which the artist and her siblings devour their father. Bourgeois has suggested that this piece has to do with sexuality between generations. “Because it is not possible,” she says, “It ends in death.” We seem to be looking at the gruesome aftermath.
When the installation made its gallery debut in 1978, it was animated by a performance entitled A Banquet/A Fashion Show of Body Parts. You can see a video of this performance nearby. Bourgeois outfitted a parade of art-world luminaries in outlandish latex costumes with breast-like mounds. The humorous show changed the entire tone of the piece. After watching it, Bourgeois declared that the performance – quote- “encapsulated the element of entrapment, humor and teasing that is present in all of my work.”
