Family Legacy Missions
The stories of Zambia's orphans and the efforts of Family Legacy to reach them.

If we hire you for this one, we will also have you do a second video for which we need the voice to match. It's a companion piece to this video.

We need someone who has a voice of compassionate and can follow the highs/lows and nuances of this emotional script. The script makes lots of emotional will go from telling the tragic story of an orphan to the hope and joy of his rescue. But you will be coached through the script so we can nail it.

Down to earth...more like a storyteller, not heavy narrator. At times like it's a story you witnessed first hand.

Here is a link to a rough cut video with my scratch track. While my voice is horrible, the style and pace of delivery is exactly what we want. If you dont' have time to watch the first couple of minutes and a later more hopeful part of the video, don't bother auditioning.

The script has changed since this rough cut, but you'll get the idea.

When you get ready to cut your demo, read through the script and pick a few sections with different levels of emotion so I can hear how you are going to deliver it. Make sure sure you give us some of the first part for sure though...the opening story of Azizi.

Family Legacy Video Script:

Try to imagine…this: You’re nine years old. Every day of your life is a struggle. You didn’t eat today and your stomach begs for a tomorrow with food. In the shack that is your home, you wrap yourself with your arms for warmth. The screaming of your parents in the next room forces your hands to your ears. And then…the unthinkable happens. Your dad kills your mom…and then he takes his own life…In one horrific moment, both your parents are gone…and you never even had a chance to say goodbye.

Unfortunately, this nightmare is real. Meet Azizi. This is his story. And though his name means “beloved,” love is the last thing he feels right now.

Through the pain and the heartache, he wonders to himself…What now? Where do I go? Who’s going to take care of me?

Sadly, Azizi is not the only child asking these questions – he’s one of more than a million orphans in Zambia. Like Azizi, their childhood was taken from them far too soon – their innocence, stolen…their hope, destroyed. And while their stories may be different, they all share one constant – suffering.

At a time in their lives when they should be learning, growing and playing with friends, all their energy and focus shifts to finding their next meal and simply…surviving.

Life in the southern African nation of Zambia isn’t just difficult…it’s next to impossible. 86 percent of the 12 million people who call it home make less than a dollar a day. The average life expectancy in Zambia is a shocking 38 years and it has a higher percentage of orphans than any country in the world. One out of every six children is an orphan – lost...filled with pain and crying out for love.

The cry of the orphan is never missed by God the Father. He’ll move heaven and earth to answer them. “I will not leave you as orphans,” He says, “I will come to you.” And so it was, in the year 2000, that God opened our ears to their cry and laid their burden…heavy…on our hearts. Family Legacy Missions International was established. Established to be a shade and covering for the Orphans of Zambia. And from the beginning, God has orchestrated it all…every strategy and every rescue. And with each passing year, He again breaks our hearts for what breaks His.

By God’s grace, what started as an outreach camp for orphans has grown to become a dynamic, multi-faceted ministry that’s transforming this nation…one child, one household, one community at a time.

But for decades, Zambia has been the devil’s playground… where every child is under attack.

The Bible says “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy...” In Zambia, the thief certainly has. And he won’t stop until every child’s future is stolen, abused and destroyed. He shows…no mercy.

But John 10:10 doesn’t end there – it ends with a bold promise – “But I have come that they may have LIFE …and have LIFE more abundantly.”

It was this verse that God used to launch Family Legacy Missions into its first key ministry to the Zambian orphans – CampLIFE !

CampLIFE opened in the summer of 2002, – with a simple vision: bring intense love, lasting hope and boundless joy to the forgotten children of Zambia. Since that first year, Americans by the thousands and orphans by the tens of thousands have experienced firsthand what God meant by abundant life. The power of His Word. The touch of His presence. The compassion of His heart. All part of a permanent transformation that still amazes us.

Ask any one of these children and they’ll likely tell you CampLIFE is the best week of their whole year. Ask the American families and young adults who travel to Zambia to serve them and you’ll get the same response. Their lives are never the same.

The impact on both is profoundly deep: the kids experience God’s redemptive love and saving grace. And the volunteers are transformed as they are used by God and exposed to realities that burn Zambia into their hearts. American families are knit together as moms, dads, sons and daughters serve side-by-side…leaving their own family legacy to a generation of Zambian orphans.

As Camp LIFE grew each year by leaps and bounds, it quickly became apparent that this power-packed, joy-filled week of camp was just the beginning of God’s Plan. In order to truly transform a nation one child at a time, it would require even more.

Many of the children needed help to meet their basic life necessities – food, medical care, counseling and education. To meet this need Family Legacy Missions started the Father’s Heart program that allows the financial sponsorship of an individual child to help cover the costs of their life needs. But what makes this sponsorship program so powerful [also voice this sentence with “unique” instead of “powerful] is that you can also go to Zambia and visit your child and personally deliver what your child needs.

[Buffy interview segment]

The sponsorship portion of the Father’s Heart program has seen rapid growth and significant impact. In three short years, the program mushroomed to almost 3,000 orphans served in 18 different slum compounds throughout Lusaka. In these dense and heavily impoverished areas of the capital city, Family Legacy has opened Community Resource Centers as a ministry hub and place of refuge for children in need. While they resemble youth centers in many ways, there is a significant difference – ministry is constantly taking place.

The kids are known there, loved there, and often rescued there. Rescued like Selah.

You see, Selah was beaten severely by her stepmom and sexually abused by her father. But that’s not all. Her father began to prostitute her to his friends – he sold his daughter’s body…and… her innocence. He made money. She contracted AIDS.
But the great news today is – Selah has been rescued. And through the love and care of the Family Legacy team, her life has been transformed.

She now lives at a Community Resource Center where she is fed, receives medication, is counseled, and most of all…loved. Having lost her mother and suffered the abuse of countless men, God heard Selah’s cry and gave her a new family. She’s being sponsored by people who love her and who are praying she’ll receive everything God has for her life.

You don’t rescue a million orphans all at once. It starts with one cry, one child, one changed life at a time. But it can be done and God is using the Community Resource Centers – located in the very neighborhood’s where this kind of abuse is happening – to do it.

God’s plan for these children goes far beyond rescue…it involves complete restoration. He’s placed greatness in each of them. And through the Lifeway Christian Academies, this greatness is being called out. In Zambia, school is a privilege. A privilege most of the children reached through the Father’s Heart would never have known. But now these academies, located all over Lusaka are providing hope and a future for Family Legacy’s sponsored children.

Camp LIFE and the Father’s Heart both identify and minster to children in need. But many of them are double orphans – they’ve lost both parents and are often passed around from relative to relative until they’re eventually left to fend for themselves. Many just sleep on the streets. And many are HIV positive.

Beauty’s parents died when she was just a little girl. What she needed was a safe place. Instead, she was taken to her aunt’s house.

Her aunt was a drunk who began to regularly starve her, beat her, and refused to treat Beauty’s painful disease – Sickle-Cell Anemia. And this aunt, who Beauty still refers to as her mother left the door wide open for the enemy.

[Beauty soundbite]

Imagine the reality of contemplating suicide at the age of 11 and you start to understand the living hell that was Beauty’s childhood.

To adequately minister to children like Beauty, Family Legacy started the Tree of Life Children’s Village. These homes are the crown jewel of Family Legacy’s mission to love and care for the children of Zambia. This haven of hope and light provides comprehensive care – physical, emotional, educational and spiritual development for the most difficult and extremely needy children. And because of this, the Tree of Life is where the most spectacular stories of redemption can be found.

[Pastor Erick Interview]

The impact that’s possible through this holistic approach is so great that it can’t simply be measured by the life of one child. Every one of these children will make a difference in the lives of many, many others. Some will go on to become doctors and lawyers, some… teachers and government leaders. Others will become counselors and ministers in their community, and all of them will be a voice of encouragement and comfort for the children who are facing the challenges they themselves have already overcome.

When Azizi arrived at the Tree of Life, he could never have anticipated this line of children, cheering and singing for him. This kind of greeting is reserved for celebrities, right? The children of the Tree of Life celebrated because they knew something he didn’t: they knew, that in a moment, God would move their new brother Azizi from his path of suffering, loneliness, and despair to one of provision, love, and joy.

And Beauty? It’s only because she has the courage to share her story that we know what God has brought her through.

[Beauty soundbite]

Her joy is real. And so is her beauty.

Her story was discovered at CampLIFE. Her healing began with the Father’s Heart. The next chapter is now being written at the Tree of Life Children’s Village. And countless orphans will follow in her footsteps.

It’s a story told again and again over these last 10 years – it’s one we never tire of. The story of how our loving God reaches down to rescue an orphan of Zambia.

That’s what God does – He takes those things that no one else seems to want, that our world decides aren’t worth much and He calls them priceless. He says, “I want you”. He says, “I love you.” And He says, “I’m going to use you to do something great.”

As we look back over the first ten years of Family Legacy, all we can say is, “Our God has done great things.”
