Script Excerpts

1. I won’t deny that I’ve heard some compelling arguments about how affirmative action and quota systems harm poor white and Asian students. I often find that I don’t have anything to say when I hear my colleagues talk about this problem. But even so, something doesn’t sit right with me when I hear one of these diatribes. The people sound disingenuous to me. I have one colleague who always decries the plight of Asian students, but I honestly don’t think he gives a hoot about Asian students. They are convenient victims for him, statistics he can use so that he doesn’t sound like a complete racist when he’s going on about underperforming African-American and Latino students.

2. For myself and for the educators here in New York, the case of ************* has brought a lot of attention—some of it unwanted, I have to admit—to how our schools provide bilingual education and to whom. What nobody really wants to talk about is the fact that this is a big class issue.
