One of the first things you should do when you open Sketch is to turn on the View Measurements option.
Checking View Measurements makes it possible to see all measurements of a sketch, not just the selected room or wall.
You can turn on this option by clicking Measurements from the View button in the lower-right corner of the Sketch workspace.
To demonstrate the difference, weÂ’ve unchecked the Measurements option, and youÂ’ll note that you canÂ’t see the dimensions in the rooms.
When we click the View button and check Measurements, however, you can now see all dimensions.
Chapter 4 Lesson 2: Room Dimensions
When sketching, it is important that youÂ’re familiar with not only the tools of Sketch, but also item details. This lesson covers room details.
Each room is made up of six parts: the room label, its walls, dimensions, a properties button, and handles.
The room label contains the name of the room, while the room itself is dimensioned and shaped by its walls. Xactimate displays dimensions for both interior and exterior measurements, depending on available space in the sketch. This is extremely helpful, but requires close attention--when changing dimensions, make sure you change the right ones.
Clicking the Properties icon opens a window containing further details of the room, but weÂ’ll cover that in a later lesson.
A roomÂ’s handles are the interactive parts of the room, enabling you to grab and move them like the handle of a briefcase. While there are many types of handles, youÂ’ll only see three attached to a room in Plan view: a red diamond label handle, blue square wall handles, and red diamond vertex handles.
By clicking, holding, and dragging the label handle, you can easily move a room from one part of a sketch to another. You can place a room by releasing the mouse button if there is sufficient space for the room.
The square, blue wall handles enable you to change the roomÂ’s dimensions. You can do this in a variety of ways, and we will cover this is a later lesson in this chapter.
The diamond, red vertex handles allows you to change the vertexes of the room. WeÂ’ll show you more on this in a later lesson.
Each of these room details is important in the sketching process, and will be covered in greater depth.
