VOICES OF THE CHICHINAUTZIN

NARRATION AUDITION SCRIPT

1) V/O:

Mexico City. The world’s biggest city. This urban monster is growing at an alarming rate, jeopardizing the precious natural resources that make the Chichinautzin a special place.

The Chichinautzin is a biological corridor that joins two national parks, the Lagunas de Zempoala and El Tepozteco.

Spanning over 65,000 hectares its borders stretch between Morelos and Mexico states, and the Federal District of Mexico City.

These parks are connected by the corridor so that plant and animals can spread freely to maintain biodiversity.

A highspeed highway connects this natural, pristine region with these vast urban areas.

Each year, over 7 million people travel on this highway, joining Mexico City and Cuernavaca to the Chichinautzin in just 45 minutes.

Most of them come to Tepoztlan, the heart of the Chichinautzin Corridor.

2) V/O:

Most of the illegal logging takes place near the town of San Juan Atzingo, which is the communal land of the Tlahuica, an indigenous community that has been established here for generations.

They have no economy based on forestry.

Instead they are defending their land from the loggers.

3) V/O:

On May 15, 2007, tragedy struck. While traveling home the two sons of Idelfonso Zamora, Aldo and Misael, were ambushed by identified members of the illegal logging cartel.

21 year-old environmentalist Aldo Zamora was shot dead.

Outcries from environmental and human rights groups led to wide press coverage, which brought national attention to the region and the danger and damage it faces from the loss of its forests.

4) V/O:

The Chichinautzin Corridor supplies seventy per cent of the drinking water to Cuernavaca and Mexico City.

These are very thirsty cities.

Water comes here from the aquifers of the Corridor, which is the most important water collection region for Morelos and Mexico states, and the Federal District.

Aquifers are areas of permeable rock that contain or transmit groundwater that comes from rain.

Warm currents of air containing water vapor flow upwards from the valleys over the Chichinautzin mountains.

In these high elevations, the vapor cools, changing into tiny water droplets, forming clouds.

When the clouds reach the forest areas, the water vapor condenses and creates rain.

The rainfall filters through the permeable rock and collects in the lakes and deep aquifers within the mountains.

Big quantities of groundwater are stored here and pumped to the surrounding cities and towns. But, it’s not easy for everyone to get.

1) V/O:
