Ideally looking for a 20's - something female voice with a slight Indian accent. In 2009, I was a grad student at Stanford, and our team won the award for Best Health or Medicine Project at the iGEM (pronounced: eye-gem) competition. iGEM stands for International Genetically Engineered Machine and it is all about building community for young scientists interested in synthetic biology.
After that, one of my professors and I launched a venture to continue our work developing medical applications for using modified DNA from E.Coli. We are a distributed organization, with employees all over the world. We can’t afford the equipment we need for each location, so we pay a fee to share resources that are available at facilities near each employee. It’s kind of like a collective for instrumentation.
The whole field of synthetic biology has really developed quickly, I think in part because of this collaborative mindset. A lot of my work is based on BioBrick parts, which are open-source pieces of DNA. We use them like building blocks to create new biological systems. And we keep giving back to the registry, too.
It’s not that different than what I learned from my Dad when I was a kid. He introduced me to the idea of open source software at a young age, and he liked to spend his free time tinkering around with electronic components in the garage. He hoped I would become an engineer like him, but I was always more interested in biology. Neither one of us ever thought that I would end up doing something that combines the two.
