The crust is Earth’s outer skin. It’s the layer that we live on. Their are two different kinds of crust on Earth’s surface. One crust, the oceanic crust is found under the ocean. The other crust is called continental crust because it formed the continents. The crust is made of almost 50% oxygen and almost 30% silicon. It also contains iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. It is also between 5 and 80 kilometers thick.
The Mantle is the next layer in Earth’s structure. It’s around 3,000 kilometers thick. It’s a lot hotter than the crust. The rock in the mantle is extremely hot and made up of magnesium, silicon, iron, and oxygen. The mantle is the thickest layer in Earth’s structure.
The Outer Core
The Outer Core is like a liquid coating of the Inner Core. It’s a liquid layer of a variety of metals like iron and nickel. It’s also 2,258 kilometers thick. The Outer Core is around 4,000-5,000 degrees celsius. The metals it’s composed of are in a liquid state due to the immense pressure and heat from the core.
The Inner Core
The Inner Core is a giant iron ball in the middle of the planet. The temperature here ranges from 5,000-6,000 degrees celsius. It’s radius is also 1,222 kilometers. The reason the Inner Core remains a solid and not a liquid like the Outer Core is because the pressure and temperatures here is so great that the iron that makes up the Inner Core is pushed together and the atoms can’t move around like a liquid.
