Younger manager:
...I understand this is about a transfer for one of your employees.
And John, you are requesting this transfer for Adam? Does he know about this?
Older manager:
I wanted to be sure the process was cleared with management before I bring it up with Adam. But, I think it’s the right thing to do for the majority of my team.
Younger manager:
There’s nothing in Adam’s personnel files that indicates a problem with his performance or any issues with him as an employee.
Explain what’s going on John...
Older manager:
Several of my employees have complained... I don’t want to name names – but, a number of people are telling me they’re uncomfortable. It’s because it’s pretty obvious that Adam is gay.
...Please understand, I don’t care personally... but, other people have brought the problem to my attention and as their manager, I feel I have a responsibility to them.
We don’t want Adam fired – we just think it would be healthy if he made a move to a different department.
Younger manager:
If I’m understanding that this has nothing to do with Adam’s work performance, and everything to do with his alleged sexual orientation – then, John I’m afraid this amounts to discrimination.
We can’t transfer Adam or treat him differently because of his sexual orientation.
Older manager:
What about the other team members? Don’t they have rights too?
Younger manager:
John, under Equal Employment Opportunity laws, the company cannot discriminate against employees about personal things like race or their religion or their sexual preferences.
Unless there is a problem with Adam’s conduct as an employee or his ability to do his job – and I don’t see any – there are no grounds for a transfer.
